Space City Gamelan is Houston's very own Indonesian Orchestra!
A gamelan is a musical ensemble of Indonesian origin featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums, and gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings, and vocalists may also be included.
A gamelan as a set of instruments is a distinct entity, built and tuned to stay together; instruments from different gamelan are not interchangeable. Our set of instruments were handmade in West Java (also known as Sunda).
Gamelan music provided ambiance for the courts of Indonesia as well as accompanying puppet plays and public ceremonies. Traditional gamelan music is described as repetitive and trace inducing. Because Space City Gamelan focuses on the music as the point of interest, the composition forms are much more dynamic and engaging for the listener, making our sound accessible, lively and highly original.
